Release Date Set for Spectacular Anime Feature “Pompo the Cinephile”
Nyallywood comes to cinemas on April 27-29, GKIDS announced with a referential teaser. The film, which previewed in the United States in 2021 in New York City and Los Angeles as part of festivals, delivers a tight story of how movies are made, at least when producer Pompo takes the lead!
Directed by veteran animator Takayuki Hirao and produced by brand-new animation studio CLAP, Pompo the Cinephile is a rollicking, exuberant ode to the power of the movies, and the joys and heartbreak of the creative process, as a new director and his team devote their lives to the pursuit of a “masterpiece.”

DreamWorks Animation HBCU Fellowship Applications Open Until March 1
DreamWorks becomes the latest studio to team with Historically Black Colleges and Universities to bring talented students further animation training and careers. This fellowship offers 15 paid positions to current HBCU students or recent graduates in May and June 2022.
HBCUs, a distinction granted by the Higher Education Act of 1965, are accredited institutions established before 1964 for education of African Americans, which now prepare all students, regardless of race, for the workforce. You can find a list of HBCUs here.
In 2021, stop motion studio LAIKA announced its partnership with HBCU Bowie State in Maryland to further develop the school’s animation program and provide the Oregon-based company with East Coast connections.

Richard Williams, author of “The Animator’s Survival Kit” and animation director of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” died on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019.

Imogen Sutton, Williams’ wife, shared this tribute to Williams and his fans through his Twitter account this weekend:
“Mo here, Dick’s wife & long time collaborator. We’ve been blown away by the outpouring of love & affection from friends and fans all over the world. Dick would have been knocked out by the incredible recognition for him and his craft. Dick’s legacy lies in all his student’s work.”
The 86-year-old animator also created “The Thief and the Cobbler,” a personal project whose decades of work — he began animating the film in the 1960s — were nearly undone in 1995 when financial troubles caused the unfinished film to be recut into two versions without Williams’ involvement. A “recobbled cut” of the film as it appears to have been intended lives on Youtube (at this link).
More about Williams’ “Animator’s Survival Kit” in all its forms: video, book and e-book, can be found at his website.

Thinking about going to CTN Animation eXpo this year?
The one-day exhibit hall pass is on sale today (Monday, May 28) for just $10. Buy the full three days of passes for $30 by buying three $10 tickets rather than $95 for a three-day XPass Plus!

We recommend not buying these exhibit hall-only passes if you have your heart set on panels or CTN-sponsored networking.
- These discount passes only gain you entry to the huge exhibit hall full of artists and studios, who often offer their own portfolio reviews.
- If you want something more than these opportunities (and any of CTN’s vague “after-hours networking events,” also included with the $10 tickets), including any animated film screenings, Raise the Bar Recruiting through CTN, or entry into lottery for animation studio tours, this ticket will keep you sadly on the outside of it all.
We think the exhibit hall is worth the trip, as we at Animation Force had a lot of success meeting other artists and talking with studios from inside the exhibit tent last year.
- Unless CTN has drastically reorganized their own portfolio review process, you’ll likely find yourself standing in line for literal hours waiting for a review, despite what CTN’s portfolio time window cards claim.
- Panels, screenings and portfolio reviews are all great things to take advantage of at CTN if you have the time and money, but at least for @scribbleaddict and @harmonicacave, we cannot justify the huge price difference ($115 for one day with panels, or $175 for three days) when the exhibit hall was where we most wanted to be.
- We know there are conflicting opinions on the animation expo, but we highly recommend the event for aspiring artists or animators who want to work in the industry, and not just for California.
If you’re interested in one of the fancier passes, we recommend waiting for a discount on those instead of buying now. Ticket prices for CTNX will not raise until August (excluding the $10 sale, that ends today), and last year they offered discounts closer to the event thanks to an ILUVBURBANK discount code.

Holly Frey will host a new podcast by Cartoon Network and HowStuffWorks called “Drawn: The Story of Animation.”
Beginning May 1, 2018, “Drawn” will interview special guests and talk all things cartoon within an 11-episode first season. These audio episodes will include a “definitive exploration of cartoons with an insider’s perspective” from “show creators, voice actors and historians.”
According to the press release from CN-parent network Turner, Frey will be joined by the following guests:
- Eric Bauza
- Seth Green
- Doc Hammer and Christopher McCulloch
- Liz Harvatine
- Mike Lazzo
- Vanessa Marshall
- Michael Ouweleen
- Jennifer Pelphrey
- Ian Jones-Quartey
- Rob Sorcher
- Tara Strong
- Rebecca Sugar
- Billy West
While some of the guests overlap with the aforementioned Nick Animation Podcast (Billy West in season 1 and Tara Strong, season 2), we expect to hear different insights from these icons of the animation industry. “Drawn” promises to explore animation history with help from “today’s artists,” with different focuses each week, from music and sound effects, consumer products and culture influence, to how cartoons get made, women in animation, and more.
This is the second podcast from Cartoon Network, whose Steven Universe Podcast is now in its second season. HowStuffWorks, an educational website founded in 1998, produces numerous podcasts, including Frey’s other podcast “Stuff You Missed in History Class.”

Rebecca Sugar, creator of Steven Universe, makes an appearance on both podcasts. Photos courtesy Turner Pressroom.
The “Drawn” podcast will release every Tuesday on all major platforms, Turner reports, including iTunes, Spotify, TuneIn and GooglePlay. A trailer (linked to Apple Podcasts/iTunes here) released yesterday.
Calling all animators, illustrators, and animation enthusiasts! An Anastasia Re-Animate Project Needs More Artists
Back in 2015, news dropped that Don Bluth’s Anastasia was to be adapted into a musical meant for the stage. With music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and a book by Terrence McNally, the stage adaptation makes a number of changes by taking liberties with the structure of the original plot, while still hoping to capture the animated film’s spirit that so resonated with its original audiences and fans.
In hoping to commemorate this adaptation’s debut on Broadway by late April 2017, an Anastasia Re-Animate project ( @re-anastasia ) was launched that aims to recreate the iconic “Once Upon a December” sequence from the original film as sung by Liz Callaway.

Press release photo of the “Once Upon a December” sequence when the show previewed at the Hartford Stage in Hartford, CT.
Since the popularity and viral appeal of a Sailor Moon re-animate project back in 2014, re-animate projects allow fan animators and all artists alike into working on something together that they collectively love. Whether through recreating your favorite anime episode, or cartoon-izing beloved Youtubers, these fan-driven collaborations demonstrate that animation can be unifying through many forms while additionally harnessing the power of fandom.
The project has already started production, but applications are still open in need of more animators and illustrators who want to contribute. For all those interested, additional details and the application form can be found here.

The Royal Ocean Film Society (aka Andrew Saladino’s YouTube channel) celebrated a year of film analysis videos this month by sharing some research and thoughtful discussion on how the role of an editor differs in animation.
This seven-minute film is a must-watch for people interested in the animation industry.
